6:45 – 8:00  Circuit Bending 101, by Sam Peck

Circuit-bending is an electronic art which implements creative audio short-circuiting. This renegade path of electrons represents a catalytic force capable of exploding new experimental musical forms forward at a velocity previously unknown. Anyone at all can do it; no prior knowledge of electronics is needed. The technique is, without a doubt, the easiest electronic audio design process in existence. Bring a toy to bend (optional), be prepared to kill the toy by accident. Good targets range from the fairly simple (talking greeting cards, music keychains, teletubbies) to more complicated (drum machines, speak and spells, keyboards). As long as it’s battery-operated and makes a noise, it’s bend-worthy (though not guaranteed bendable). The toy needs to work properly and have batteries. Secondhand shops are the cheapest places to find this stuff. The older the better. newer circuits have surface-mount components and shrunken technologies that are a lot harder to mess with.
